The pronunciation of Charlotte’s name - with the accent
on the second syllable - is always a source of curiosity.
It was named to honor King George III's young bride,
Charlotta. Charlotte is approximately ten miles south
of Burlington on the shores of Lake Champlain. One of
the oldest functioning ferry crossings in America is
here with service to Essex, New York.
The lush land, miles of wooded shore, and the lake
give Charlotte its beauty and importance in the eyes
of its residents. More than a dozen dairy farms still
operate in the fertile countryside. The town’s
center at the Four Corners is graced by several buildings
from the 1700's, and the well-known Old Brick Store
on the corner is an area landmark.
Throughout the town you'll find diverse housing from
rental properties to riding stables, raised ranches
to colonials, summer camps to majestic estates. A number
of interesting agricultural related businesses call
Charlotte home, among them the Vermont Wildflower Farm,
Golden Apple Orchard, Charlotte Berry Farm, Horsford’s
Nursery, and Country Home Products, famous maker of
DR mowing and gardening equipment.
Family recreation opportunities are nearby from picnicking
at the town beach to hiking up Mount Philo for astounding
views of the Champlain Valley below.
